A partnership that has weathered many seasons

Speaking to Dialogue Earth, Dr Ma Jun, Chairman of CASI, observed that green finance has remained one of the most “de-politicised” areas of cooperation between China and the UK. Since the Taskforce was founded in 2017, it has continued to deliver practical results, steadily, and often without fanfare, even during periods when the wider bilateral relationship was cooler.

That steadiness was gently on display on 25 June, when the London Stock Exchange welcomed the Taskforce with an opening bell ceremony at its climate investment summit. Two collaborative outcomes were shared that day: a joint report exploring how the two countries approach corporate climate disclosure, transition planning and green bond markets, and a new FTSE CCB Dim Sum Green Bond Index, developed by FTSE Russell and China Construction Bank, which may help international investors better understand the offshore RMB green bond market.

Learning from one another on transition finance

Dr Ma also shared an update on the Taskforce’s transition finance sub-working group, formed in June 2025. It has grown to 29 member institutions from both countries, working together on transition standards, helping companies develop and assess their transition plans, and exploring the financial tools that might support them.

What feels encouraging is how practical this work is becoming. Dr Ma noted, for example, that the UK has accumulated valuable experience in decarbonising buildings, and the Taskforce is exploring how this might inform a building decarbonisation project in a Beijing business district. It is a small but meaningful example of what patient, mutual learning can look like. Each side bringing what it knows, and finance quietly serving as the bridge.

Wider world and Capacity-building

Dr. Ma highlighted that China and the UK, by working together, can help support climate transitions in countries across the Global South.

Founded two and a half years ago under Dr Ma’s leadership, the Capacity-building Alliance of Sustainable Investment aspires to bring sustainable finance training to 100,000 learners worldwide, and we have been grateful to see our programmes reach participants in more than 100 countries and regions so far. We are equally grateful for the UK’s contribution to this journey ,  of CASI’s 74 members, around 20 are UK-based or closely connected to the UK, reflecting the country’s long experience in green finance.

The UK’s standards and disclosure experience, China’s experience in scaling green markets, and the openness of partners everywhere to learn from one another.
